2-Year Old Still Not Walking… Shows No Interest!?

My son is approaching his 2nd birthday, and still isn’t walking. We’ve taken him to the pediatrician to have him looked at & nothing is wrong with his motor skills or his muscular development. We’ve tried holding his hands through the house & at stores… Also, we’ve done the walker thing both stationary & mobile. Tried ride-alongs & propping him along our couch, etc. Still no effort. Has no desire to walk at all. He is mobile though, he scoots wherever he wants to go… & Fast! Gets into everything, so I know it’s not a mental handicap or anything… I just don’t understand… Anyone else out there having this problem? It’s tough listening to other parents talk about their 8 month olds that are taking their first steps & ours is still sitting… Don’t understand… Feels like I’ve failed to teach him!

Oh, I know just how you feel. My daughter didn’t walk or crawl until she was 2 weeks shy of 18 months old. She just sat and scooched on her bum. It was sooo frustrating to see younger children running, jumping, and climbing on things, while mine sat and watched. However, right before 18 months she started cruising furniture, then one Sunday she started walking. Across the entire room. It was such a relief once she finally started. Now she is 26 months and is getting faster at walking, and starting to run a little. She still doesn’t jump or climb too much. Just last week, she finally figured out how to get up the stairs to the slide at the park. I was sooo proud :) .

I was such a paranoid mom, I thought for sure something must be wrong. We asked the doctor several times, and at 15 months, we did an x-ray of knees and hips, just to make sure nothing was wrong. It wasn’t. She was just not ready to walk yet. But it made me feel so much better that my doctor had ordered those tests, so that I didn’t have to worry anymore.

Some of the things that I think helped her finally walk were:
time with other walking kids
Me refusing to carry her–she had to get places on her own
Bribery–once she started walking, we would give her bites of a treat if she would walk to us
Using he exersaucer/bouncer. It helped develop the muscles in her legs
Being in the grass–she would stand because she hated the grassy feeling on her legs

Really, if he’s not ready, he’s not ready. And he’ll probably be just fine once he starts walking. But I would definitely ask your pediatrician again at his 2 year appointment. Or ask for a second opinion. Because IF there is something wrong with bones or muscles, it’s best if you catch it now. Then he can get the physical therapy or whatever else he needs. And if there’s nothing wrong, at least you definitely know that :) .

Also, make sure your child is progressing in other areas. My daughter is VERY verbal. As long as your child is making strides and learning new things all the time, the not walking is not as big of a deal. If he’s not learning (verbal, listening, fine motor) something new, then mention this to the doctor, too.

Good luck! And remember, they come with much of their personality, and we get to learn to love them because of it. Don’t let anyone let you feel down that you haven’t “taught” him enough. Just smile and let it roll off your back. It’s not worth the fight. And, as one of my friends told me when I was worried about the walking thing, “It all evens out by kindergarten!”

When you spend your childhood practically worshiping someone, the day they turn on you can be a smack in the face. When you spend your life looking up to someone, the day they leave can feel so confusing. When both of these things happen all at once, life its self can seem impossible.

Amelia Katherine Imogene was a phenomenal woman. Not once did she ever make me sad, or scare me. She had a loving touch and a warm heart. I felt extremely lucky to be able to call her my mother.
Her favorite things to do were baking, painting, and reading. She loved wearing flowery dresses in the summer and had naturally curly, sandy blonde hair. She tanned easily and had a face full of freckles. She always told me stories about her life. In high school she won the talent show four years in a row for her singing. In middle school she joined the swimming team and loved it. She was raised by a single mother and had two older sisters. Church was a tradition on Sunday mornings and every holiday had a celebration. When I was little, we held hands and walked around the neighborhood in our costumes, ready for Halloween and candy, while daddy stayed home and handed out the treats. One summer afternoon, I was riding my bike up and down the street while she was working on the garden. I was almost to the end of the road when I heard her voice calling for me. My heart raced. I thought something was wrong and raced home. I pulled up, threw my bike down and ran up to her garden, only to see her standing there, smiling at me with a small kitten in her hands. She explained that he looks very young and probably didn’t have a mom, so he needed a place to stay. That night I made a bed in the corner of my room for him while mom made up fliers, just in case he already had a family. Turned out that he didn’t have one, and I still own him to this day. His name is Gulliver.
My father was a hard working man. He spent the day working with a construction and roofing crew. Some days when me and mom were driving to the grocery store, we would drive by the new housing development at that time and see if we could find him. There he would be, standing on the roof, sun shining down on his tan muscular arms. He looked like a superhero or a warrior, giving out orders and wiping the sweat from his brow. He loved to wrap me up in tons of layers and take me outside to play in the snow. We built a snowman every year. He played guitar and taught me all I know. Him and my mom would sit in the living room and sing some country or old rock songs. He was the life of the parties my mom threw. He would tell funny stories, using his arms to gesture and act out the scenes. After I was sent to bed, they would all gather around a small bon fire. Sometimes, I would watch them from my upstairs window. They were so happy and had so many friends.
My house is a large home. It has so much space and room to grow. Its nestled back behind a few trees in the country part of Pennsylvania. The yard is large and the woods provide great places for hide and go seek. This was especially great when my little sister Sophia was born. I was four years old and could not wait. Mother would tell me about how I could help her care for little Phia once she was around. She was born healthy, with honey colored eyes and strawberry blonde hair. Years went by and life was great. Me and Phia grew up together and went to school together. Mom and dad loved each other and life couldn’t have been better. But I soon learned that not everything can be great forever. It doesn’t have enough mystery or intrigue to draw me in or want me to read more. Try writing this in third person – like you are watching the scene unfold. Get to heart of the matter quick and pull us in. Yank out the rug in the first paragraph. We don’t need all the back story right up front. All of that can be weaved in throughout the story.

Some people have the genetics to gain muscle relatively quickly and some do not, if at all. The best thing to do is to concentrate on being healthy. Many people, including me, looked at a lot of body- building magazines and thought, “Why can’t I be that big or muscular?” Those professional bodybuilders and models that they PAY for are the extreme of the sport. That lifestyle is not healthy at all. The diets they are on can play havoc with with your normal, natural body systems. I have seen a lot of people go through some really bad circumstances with steroids and putting all sorts of garbage in to their bodies wanting to get those extreme results. You can not keep going for extended periods of time with little or no body fat. (7% and below). Talk to your doctor before you buy or start taking any supplement. Talk to a nutritionist about changes in your food choices. Talk to a personal trainer about different exercises you can do. There is a lot of information out there, be sure it comes from some one who is trained and educated. I am 45 yr old male and I lost over one hundred pounds and gained some really good HEALTHY muscle on a HEALTHY food plan and exercise regimen. Hope this helps. Peace!

I’m going to back-track a little bit because it’s very important to understand the BASICS and misconceptions (while you may know this already). Supplement do just what the name implies; supplement the body. If you’re serious about working out then you know protein and water are your best friends. You have to eat. Without eating you will get nowhere. When I started out I was working out and taking everything on the market (from creatine, to amino acids to gluatime etc.) I got nowhere. I took some advice from a freind and dropped the supplements and just ate really high quality food (with tons of protein) and I got MUCH better results then I had with supplements. Then I added the supplements and it all went hand in hand. Don’t be fooled, keep it simple. As far as which supplements to go with (if your diet and work out regime is in check), stick with the basics creatine (great for energy), amino acids (once again aids proteins your already eating), protein drinks and bars (dont rely solely on them, but they are great for getting extra protein), glutamine (aids protein synthesis), and a good mulit-vitamin (to make sure your not missing anything). Once again eat, eat, eat and plenty of water. Good luck.

Protein shakes are bad. Don’t take them.

Take whey, for example. It is a by-product from milk created during the cheese making process which is dehydrated, packaged as a protein supplement, and sold to you for 10 times the cost just so you can go pee it into the toilet because you’re body doesn’t need it. Here’s what the experts at the US CDC have to say about how much protein you need to provide to support your metabolic processes. –> http://www.cdc.gov/nutrition/everyone/basics/protein.html#How%20much%20protein You can easily get that amount of protein with a glass of milk and a chicken breast or piece of meat per day.

You’ll hear a lot of people tell you that you should have 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. That’s a typical bodybuilder’s formula and it’s a gross over estimate. Most experts use the following formula.

0.8 grams protein per Kg of body weight
-or-
0.36 grams protein per pound of body weight

Bodybuilders usually over estimate their protein needs because most of them are clueless and just pass along what they hear in the gym. And, why not? There’s no liability for getting a little too much so more protein is cheap insurance they are getting enough.

Bodybuilders believe they need a lot more protein that nonbodybuilders because they are building muscle. That, of course, is just wrong because most of the protein we all consume goes to the maintenance of our entire body including cell anabolization for all organs, skin, hair, marrow, smooth muscle, blood and much more which has nothing to do with skeletal muscles. And, people who are not building muscle are still replacing catabolized muscle cells which means most of the protein anyone uses will go to other than skeletal muscle repair. So, if you’re a 160 pound male and you need 58 grams of protein without strength training then another 10% would easily cover you for strength training. That would amount to 5.8 grams per day which would be 174 grams per month or about 6 ounces per month. And, six ounces of new lean muscle mass is a good number for the average growth of a 160 pound male who trains hard. Therefore, you can forget 1 g/pound and go with the 0.8g/Kg or 0.36g/pound and just add 10% if you’re a bodybuilder.

If you’re a total protein freak who really wants to make sure you have more than enough protein and you can handle the extra calories, then just double the amount from the formula. So, if the formula tells you to get 58 grams per day, make sure you get 116 grams per day. There’s no way you could possibly need more than that and that’s still well below the 1 gram per pound which bodybuilders use. Just remember that protein has the same caloric value as pure sugar (4cal/gm) so don’t get too much if you are watching your weight. And, protein in food usually comes with other nutrients including carbs and fats so weight watchers should be careful.

Always get protein from food. It’s the only way you can be sure you’re getting dietary balance and the amount of protein you need as supplements may or may not contain the amount stated on the product label. Supplements should always be avoided unless recommended by a health care professional according to the US NIH.

I want to build muscle endurance for my quads, calves, hamstrings, and arms by lifting weights for these. But should I lift with more reps and medium weights? Or more reps and light weights?

I know for sure that I should not lift with high weights and low reps yet because that’s just for power, and I don’t need that right now.

And how many reps and sets should I do…I already do isometrics for these muscles every night and takes a total of about 1hr, 15mins. Thanks

Medium weights with medium reps is what endurance trainers need. You’re not just trying to tone, and you’re certainly not trying to bulk up, so something in between is best.

Follow the “progressive loading” method. And don’t overdo the frequency of your workouts – you need to give your muscles a chance to repair themselves before stressing them out again.

Im pretty strong, and i would be in much better shape if my lungs were up to pace. I plan on joining either the army or marines with some form of infantry and eventually some kind of SOF. But not till i finish two years of college.

Well when you exercise do your drills with intensity. Don’t do 20 push ups, stop for a minute and then do sit ups. Do as many push ups as possible, as fast as you can, then IMMEDIATELY do a sprint, then do sit ups quickly. These are just examples. Keep your muscles working at 100% non stop for a long period of time.
*if you want to hold your breath longer inhale 100%, then slowly release 10% of that air, then re-inhale 110%. That’s called cracking your lungs.

I’d stay away from weight lifting. In Spec Ops training the buff guys are normally the first ones to go. Keep hard into max interval training using only your body as the resistance. Work on alot of cardio and calisthenics. I recommend “Insanity” over “P90X”. Insanity actually gives you more endurance than P90X. Plus you don’t have to go out and buy all this other stuff just to do the workouts. In Spec Ops training if candidates can’t handle using their own body as the resistance then they won’t last. Weight lifting is one of the smallest things guys will do during training because adding muscle only meanings adding weight. This means most of the big “football” sports from highschool and college are some of the least likely to make it through those pipelines.

Okay, so I made a bet with a few friends, we each have a target zone that we have to shape up, and my target zone is my thigh/hip area.
I’m 140 lbs, 5’6″, and a teenager.
I’ve been doing zumba for the past 2 months, 1-3 times a week, so full body exercises are welcome just as much as thigh/hip.
Workouts routines, specific toning exercises, and diet tips would be awesome.

1. Young teenagers should train with moderately heavy weights and mature teenagers can train with heavy weights.

2. Cardiovascular training is equally important and I suggest you do at least 10 minutes of warm up everyday.

3. Train with high repetition and low weights. General recommendation is 10-15 reps per set.

4. Do only the best Muscle mass and strength builders like compound multi-joint exercises – Bench Press, Squats and Deadlifts are key exercises. You can add the Advanced Weight Training principles later on.

5. Train the whole body. Never neglect any body part. You need bigger legs and strong back in addition to bigger arms and chest.

6. You can add sports specific training to the general exercise routines to build specific muscles required by your kind of sport.

7. Eat well and eat more. When you are exercising quality nutrition is utmost important. Eat high quantities of proteins, complex carbohydrates, multivitamins and minerals.

8. Drink enough water. 3-4 liters a day should be your goal.

9. See if Bodybuilding is for you. Sometimes the very first time you pick up a weight you feel an instant connection. If you get more passionate about Bodybuilding then may be you have the talent to be a great award winning bodybuilder. Its worth a try.

10. Remember that you are much more than your body. Develop your personality altogether. If you are a wonderful, cheerful person in addition to good looking then you will have no trouble to make friends and excel in sports.

Being active is always a good thing. There is a such thing as too much though. As long as it is not an obssession or it has gotten to the point where it takes over your life like an addiction everything should be fine. Some people have worked out so much it has caused health problems, but this would take a lot. Anything in moderation is okay no matter how intense the workout. As long as you aren’t pregnant or have another health condition keeping you from doing what you wish. Addictions aren’t good no matter what they are because excessiveness can cause something to be too much with anything. As long as it’s not that far then all is okay!! :D

Need tips on how to get into a beginners routine for a teenager to gain muscle mass.?

Hello everyone, My names Anthony and I’m in need of tips and ideas on how I can gain muscle mass.
I am roughly 65 Kgs / 143 pounds
170 Cm tall / 6 foot 7 i guess.
and Im 16 years old.

I am a very fit guy and do extremely well in endurance tests. Scored 12 flat in the beep test.
I play a variety of sports which takes up most days. ( Friday, saturday sunday.)
I’m not anorexic skinny but i am quite thin.
If my shirts off you can faintly see an outline of a Six pack so im not sure of my body fat percentage.

Basically i know the method that people take. It’s to calculate the calories you burn per day and eat more calories than that.
But actually do Gym so it doesn’t become fat.
I’ve done a rough calculation and i burn about 2300 calories a day.
The two main problems is that i eat whatever my parents cook me and the second is that i don’t have access to a gym to actually turn the fat into muscle.
I don’t have access to really anything. No dumbbells. Only thing i can really do is push ups / sit ups.

I have tested my push up ability and i can do roughly 50.

Is there anyway i can build muscle mass and lose body fat percentage without a gym?
